A Beloved Plush Dog Gets His Bounce Back: Before & After

A little plush dog arrived at the workshop: or, more precisely, was passed straight from his owner’s hands into mine.

A much-loved dog, of course. Those are the only kind we work with.

He looked flat and tired, but the first examination revealed more than tired stuffing. Once I removed the coverings from his paws, I could see what had happened: he had come into contact with something hot, and the plush on his paws had melted. Someone had made protective covers for the damaged areas, helping him hold on until his appointment at our Doll Hospital.

Now it was time to see what we could do.

First, a Thorough Clean

As usual, the work began with cleaning. In a case like this, that means hours of careful treatment rather than a quick wash: degreasing, cleaning, softening, and a hypoallergenic treatment.

With the old stuffing removed, I could work on the fabric body. Once everything was clean, I left it to dry and turned my attention to the next challenge: repairing the heat damage.

Finding the Right Patches

I tried several fabrics for the patches, but none looked right. Against his well-loved coat, every piece of new fabric stood out immediately.

The solution was to use his own fabric.

That took a little ingenuity, and even a small sacrifice from one ear to provide a patch for a damaged paw. The aim was not to give him a new appearance, but to repair him with material that already belonged to him.

He endured all this workshop surgery very bravely.

Keeping His Familiar Feel

Next came the small pouches holding his loose pellet filling. These needed repairs too.

Once restored and securely fastened in place, they returned a little weight to his muzzle, paws, and the area near his tail. Those weighted sections help preserve his familiar floppy feel, the way his body settles and drapes in your hands.

His original stuffing went back in, followed by a few final securing stitches. Everything was back where it belonged, and he was ready to see his owner again.

Ready to Go Home

Here he is: clean, repaired, and still very much himself. His own fabric, his original stuffing, and that familiar, comforting floppiness, all kept as part of the dog his owner knows and loves.

The checkered bow is a little gift from our Doll Hospital. It has become something of a signature.

All done. Time to pass him back into the hands that brought him here.
