How to restore partial destruction of the coating of an antique doll
Here is an illustrated guide to restoring a problem area on the surface of an antique doll.
The main feature of my restoration process is the use of authentic materials and technologies that correspond to the age of the doll.
And, most importantly: all my interventions can be “rolled back”.
The problem in this case is the deformation and deterioration of the coating material of the sole. This is typical damage for composite materials, especially in antique dolls, where, over time, issues arise with the integrity of the covering.
The image shows the damaged foot of an antique doll. The primary issue is the deformation and deterioration of the covering material on the sole.
There are traces of repair: part of the foot is filled with a white material (chalk?), which served as a putty during the previous restoration.
Around the foot, there is a visible loss of fragments and remains of the original material that has cracked.
The damaged area has a rough texture. It is based on a cardboard base.

The surface cleaned to stable areas is freed from dust and flaky elements. Bone glue is applied in a thin layer.
After the adhesive primer has dried, the recess can be leveled with a composite filler (the recipe for which is on my website).
Having compacted the filler tightly, be patient to allow it to harden.
The filler is sanded very well using special paper.
This is what the doll’s foot looks like after sanding with coarse-grained sandpaper.

Now you can begin the painting stage (the recipe for paint on bone glue is on my website).
Do not rush to do this in one “pass” with a brush. The thinner the layer of paint you apply, the better for the final result.

And again you need patience. Each layer of paint should dry well.
The result will surprise you in a good way.
And the doll will tell this story to your grandchildren.

Don’t forget that your doll has already lived a long life. Іt would be nice if it didn’t look like a new plastic mannequin. And only the smell of fresh wood will remind you of its repair.
